Discover is seeking three experienced artists to work alongside Discover’s Community and Education Manager and Story Builders on a new programme with the aim of empowering families and residents of Newham to share and celebrate their diverse heritage and culture through storytelling.
About the Project
Discover’s Newham Stories aims to empower parents from across the diversity of Newham’s residents to share and explore their customs, traditions, and practices through storytelling. The program is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
We are seeking artists from diverse storytelling cultures to develop eight interactive workshop sessions from April to July, inspiring families to explore their culture and heritage through storytelling. The artists will be supported by Discover’s Story Builders in these sessions, who will also contribute their expertise in telling stories from a wide variety of cultural sources, while considering the intersectionality of different traditions.
What we are looking for
We are looking for three artists from diverse storytelling cultures, ideally reflecting the diversity of Newham’s population (e.g., Caribbean, African, South Asian), and from different storytelling-related art forms such as poetry, theatre, and comedy.
These artists will each:
- Develop a 10-minute storytelling performance on their culture and heritage that can be presented to families.
- Act as the lead facilitator for an eight-session workshop for 20 families focused on culture and heritage through storytelling.
- Facilitate a rehearsal session with the participants for the final showcase day.
- Host a Mentoring Workshop to support group leaders of the workshops in planning out the showcase day and being facilitators in activities that would help participants investigate and share their storytelling approaches and routines with each other.
- Provide support on the Showcase and Storytelling Exchange Day where our participants will be performing their work at Discover, and the group leaders will be facilitating activities.
