Monster Funfair (Sensory Adapted)

Things to see & do

Our ‘Sensory Adapted’ sessions are modified in various ways, to make them more suitable for certain families with SEN.

At Discover, our events and performances are all ‘relaxed’ so that all families can enjoy them – we don’t expect our young audiences to be completely still or quiet! Our ‘Sensory Adapted’ sessions are modified in various ways, to make them more suitable for certain families with SEN. Some of the differences are:

  • We will explicitly indicate that our audience is welcome to move around, make noise and leave or re-enter the session throughout.
  • We’ve kept capacity lower, and are holding these sessions at times when Discover is generally quieter throughout the building.
  • Lights and sound levels will be adapted to make these sessions less overwhelming – we’ll also have a specific chillout area outside for those who need a break.
  • Ear defenders will be offered to those who need them (NB these are always available on request at our reception).

Roll up, roll up…

This immersive family adventure takes you through a fantastical circus tent and into the woods. In amongst the trees you’ll find an amazing, marvellous, EXTRAORDINARY… Monster Funfair!

Built entirely by monsters, our new immersive exhibition features all sorts of weird and wonderful fairground attractions – a dinosaur laser maze, a beastly fun house, mini bumble-bear bumper cars, a rollercoaster slide and lots lots more.

Created with the award-winning Nadia Shireen, this magical world also has a fairground mystery to solve – just who has stolen ALL the candyfloss?

Monster Funfair features characters from Nadia’s books, including Billy and Fatcat, The Bumblebear, the Grimwood series and more.

About Nadia Shireen

Nadia Shireen has been making picture books since 2010, when her debut Good Little Wolf burst onto the scene and was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. Since then, she’s published many more books including Barbara Throws A Wobbler, Billy and the Beast, The Cow Who Fell To Earth and Geoffrey Gets the Jitters. In 2017, The Bumblebear was distributed to over 700,000 children as part of Booktrusts’s Time To Read campaign. Her anarchic series for older readers, Grimwood, was a World Book Day title in 2022 and has since taken the playgrounds of the nation by storm. Nadia has won the UKLA book prize twice, and lost many others (though she still likes to be nominated.) She lives in Brighton.
