Lighting Designer

Discover Children’s Story Centre is looking to commission a highly skilled and innovative lighting designer.

Discover Children’s Story Centre is the UK’s first hands-on creative literature space for children aged 0-11 years and their families and carers, dedicated to generating a love of language, literature, and stories.

The Discover team works alongside bestselling authors and illustrators to create immersive installations, designed to feed children’s creativity and develop their storytelling and creative writing skills. Recent exhibitions have included Fairy Tales with David Litchfield, Judith Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came to Tea, The Wonderful World of Oliver Jeffers, Michael Rosen’s Bear Hunt, Chocolate Cake and Bad Things, and Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler’s A World inside a Book… Gruffalos, Dragons and other Creatures.

We are currently producing our new immersive installation which will open on April 1, 2022. The exhibition will run for 11 months and will be visited by up to 120,000 people. During the process we work collaboratively with illustrators, authors, set, sound and lighting designers creating high quality immersive experiences for our visitors. We are looking to commission a highly skilled and innovative lighting designer to join the creative team and play a key part in helping us achieve a completely enchanting and immersive environment. We are particularly looking for someone who has experience in designing and delivering an immersive lighting design in non-theatre indoor spaces.

The successful applicant will:

  • Be responsible for the overall lighting design and oversight of all technical areas including installation, plotting and sequencing.
  • Work collaboratively with and understand the vision of the creative team, as well as to problem solve any issues related to the space and special lighting effects.
  • Available to attend meetings and key dates as required with the creative team in East London or virtually where possible during the period December 2021-April 2022.
  • Work with the Project Manager to communicate budgetary needs and work within the assigned budget.
  • Recommend on new purchases/specification of equipment.
  • Hang, focus and gel all lighting instruments.
  • Program all cues into light board; set light levels and cue fade times.
  • Be responsible for any snagging post-opening.

 

Fee: A fee of £2400 incl. VAT, we anticipate there will be up to 12 days of work.
